How To Become A Motivational (Or Inspirational) Speaker

Have you ever wanted to become a motivational or inspirational speaker?

The ability to help people change their lives with just the power of your words is extremely powerful and fulfilling.

But have you ever thought to yourself what are the actual steps to becoming a motivational speaker? It's not a "normal" career path where you can just go out and get a degree in motivational speaking!

Having been in the personal development industry for over a decade, and having delivered hundreds of talks and also spoken on stages with the likes of Dr John Demartini from The Secret and John Assaraf from the Secret, I know it's a highly rewarding career that can make a big impact on the world too.

And the good news is you don't have to be famous or have a wildly outgoing personality to make a difference and a living being a speaker. There are 3 things you need to do…

#1: Prepare ONE Great Speech

They say that when opportunity meets preparation, success is inevitable.

If I gave you the opportunity right now to speak in front of say, 100 people, what would you talk about? If you're not sure, if you don't have a talk prepared ready to go, then that opportunity won't become a reality for you.

And if you're not sure what to talk about, think about what your message is. What would you love people to know about life or a certain topic? If it was your last day on earth and you could utter some final words of wisdom, what would they be? If that's too big a question, then just start with an aha moment or some cool thing you learned recently.

Being a motivational speaker starts with a great speech. You don't have to have hundreds of hours of content ready to roll of your tongue. You just need a 5 minute speech ready to go. Start there. Once you have a speech that motivates people, technically you are already a motivational speaker!!

That may sound simplistic, but it's true. Motivational speakers are nothing special.. They are just prepared.
Once you deliver that speech, people will start coming up to you saying "when is your next talk? Can you please let me know, I will bring my friends next time". And it grows from just 1 speech.

Like they say, "If you build it, they will come."

#2: Speak Often, Speak Everywhere

You need to hone your craft through practice. Sure, there are many skills you should learn along the way like telling stories, building confidence etc. But learning all of those things won't matter if you don't practice speaking!

They say the way you learn to play the flute, is by playing the flute! Well the way you become a better speaker, is by speaking. Many amateurs don't realize this and they get caught up in chasing a bright shiny object or searching for a silver bullet.

I remember my business partner once asked me, what was the minimum number of people we would need in a room before we cancelled the event. I said to him, 1 person (besides me of course!). Because it's still an opportunity to inspire someone, it's still an opportunity to speak.

I subscribe to what the late great Dr Wayne Dyer said, "If there were 2 rats in a sewer I would talk to them."

#3: Promote & Run Your Own Events

When it comes to making money as a professional speaker there are 2 paths you can take:

Path #1: You get paid to deliver a speech at someone else's event. This could mean you are a keynote speaker… where companies or organizations can hire you out to deliver a great speech to motivate their team. It could also mean that you deliver a presentation and sell your products at an event that someone else has marketed and ran for you.

Path #2:
You market and run your own events and also speak at them. If you think about most successful motivational speakers they market and promote their own events. This gives them flexibility and also control… control over not only how the event is run and how often, but control over their income.

When you put these 3 tips into practice, you will be well on your way to becoming a motivational speaker and making a different in other people's lives. And I just want to commend you for having the courage and heart to go out there and inspire others… from one fellow difference-maker to another.
